Spring Equinox
Post #22
The March equinox will occur on March 20, 2012, this marks the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere. “Equinox” derives from the Latin words meaning “equal night” and refers to the time when the sun crosses the equator resulting in equal day and night everywhere in the world. The March equinox marks the start of spring and has long been celebrated as a time of rebirth. Many cultures and religions celebrate or observe holidays and festivals around the time of the March equinox. Sping time flowers such as Gerberas are ones of the most popular flowers among florists; they are perfect flowering plants for giving color to any room or garden. Other popular Sping flowers are Larkspur (Delphinium). This attractive plant bears plenty of flowers, ranging between purple, blue, red, yellow or white. The majority of the species are widely grown in the garden. Orchids represent the most various family of plants known to humankind. Being one of the most adaptable plant groups on the globe, they are prized for a dainty appearance and uncommon structure.

Origins of Valentine's Day!
Peoples often assume that Valentine's Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine's death or burial--which probably occurred around A.D. 270--others claim that the Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine's feast day in the middle of February in an effort to "Christianize" the pagan celebration of Lupercalia. Celebrated at the ides of February, or February 15, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus. To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at a sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf or lupa. The priests would sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification. They would then strip the goat's hide into strips, dip them into the sacrificial blood and take to the streets, gently slapping both women and crop fields with the goat hide.
Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed the touch of the hides because it was believed to make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city's bachelors would each choose a name and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage
Valentine's Day Fact: 150 million Valentine's Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine's Day the second most popular card-sending holiday after Christmas.

The Colors of Christmas
Post #14
Bright, bold colors like red, lime green and hot pink are popular this year. If you like to stay somewhat traditional, swapping out your dark green for a lime green is an easy way to update your Christmas look. With a bright color scheme, quirky and funky flowers and ornaments accentuate the whimsical look. (Holiday Splendor) Brown is a key color for Christmas this year. Whether its natural brown tones like birch branches or magnolia leaves, or an accent of copper, the rich tones give an indulgent appeal. Think mocha and all things chocolate. Try mixing in touches of copper and gold make your space look almost good enough to eat. (Proteas and Pinecones) Be brave and break out of your red and green. Flower accents are the easiest way to add color and drama to your table and the rest of your home. (Roses and Hydrangeas).

Perfectly Harmless, Perfect Holiday
Post #12
The myth that Poinsettia plants are toxic still remains in the minds of most Americans. Poinsettias are a widespread Christmas tradition both for gift-giving and holiday decorating. Poinsettias (euphorbia pulcherrima) are native to Mexico and Central America. The Aztecs called it cuetlaxochitl. Poinsettias were introduced in the United States in 1825 by Joel Poinsett, the first U.S. ambassador to Mexico, and quickly caught on as a popular Christmas plant. Poinsettias have thin, pale green leaves. When in bloom, they display brightly colored bracts (red, pink, or white) on the top of each stem. Poinsettias like lots of bright, indirect sunlight and prefer humid conditions. As for watering, let the soil dry out between watering. The soil should be dry to the touch. Also, be sure not to let the plants pot stand in water at the plants base or saucer. Poinsettias are sensitive to extreme temperature, so don’t place your plant next to a heater or near a drafty window or doorway. A daytime temp of around 65 degrees and nights around 60 degrees will provide perfect conditions for your poinsettia.

Peoples Flowers Wins Wine & Dine!
People Flowers participated in a charity events for Share for Care at the Hyatt Tamaya on Saturday November 5th. There were 35 tables at the event each one decorated by floral designers, interior designers, event planners, artists etc. Each designer was given a table and eight chairs and allowed to decorate the table in any theme they desired. The dinner was a fund raiser and patrons actually paid to dine at each of the tables that evening.
Carl Hanson ,the artistic director for Peoples flowers , chose " a night at the casbah " for our tablescape. The centerpiece, designed in a gold and copper chalice, was comprised of roses. mokara and cymbidium orchids and mango calla lilies, which towered nearly 6 feet above the tabletop.. Copper and burnt umber linens were used. along with beautiful mahogany chevari chairs. Gold chargers and an array of jeweled elephants and gilded peacocks completed the tablescape and the 17 votives and pillar candles set and twinkling warm glow.
Carl and Peoples Flowers took first place for their table and will be featured in an upcoming issue of Albuquerque the Magazine. It was a great event and we are always pleased to help charitable causes through the arts.

Flowers have personality!
Happy Gerbera (order)
Every flower has characteristics and personality unique to its variety. It's what makes an arrangement interesting. Take the bold and happy gerbera. Bright colors are their trademark but did you know that they have a hollow stem? Not nature's best design. To compensate, we wire their heads.
Larkspur (order)
Some of our most popular line flowers, Larkspur and Stock, curl at the top of their stems, giving them a "wilted" look. Never fear! They are fresh and healthy, its just part of its charm.
Delphinium (order)
One of our only true blue flowers, the Delphinium, is also a bit odd when you look closely at it. It curls at the top of it's stem just like the Larkspur and stock, the flower even has odd tadpole shaped buds. Open blooms have tiny black whiskers at the middle and you can find Delphinium in blue ranging from New Mexico Sky Blue to Deep Coast Blue.
Stock (order)
Whether it's the bold Gerbera or the delicate Delphinium, it's the differences and
oddities that make us fans of flowers!
